Molteni Group Twelve AM Bedroom

Molteni Group

Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu of Shanghai, partners in both work and life, designed the Twelve AM bed, or more precisely, an integrated bedroom furniture system created to support restful sleep.
The distinctly Eastern bed has a simple, strict form. Wood serves as the main material, combined with metal and soft textile or leather. A tall, striking headboard almost surrounds the bed. The inner headboard is upholstered in soft textile or plain leather. A comfortable central cushion serves as a headrest.

Two leather straps in different colours attach the cushion to the headboard, highlighting the designers' attention to detail. Two small round wooden trays sit beside the headboard and serve as bedside shelves. A small projecting shelf can be added to the back of Twelve AM when the bed stands in the centre of a room.
Four slender metal legs support the wooden bed frame. The legs support a concave leather or textile container that accommodates all types of mattresses. A comfortable bench with a design that echoes the bed can stand at the foot of the bed. Leather straps hold the bench cushion in place, matching the straps on the bed.

Neri&Hu's ingenuity transforms the bench into a new accessory for a dream bedroom. An added block resembling the bed's headboard turns the bench into a small niche where residents can change clothes or hang and temporarily place garments. The accessory includes comfortable cushions. A leather strap inserted into a horizontal slot holds one movable back cushion in place, while the slot runs across the design.

Neri and Hu reflect on midnight as a transitional period between one day and the next in the Twelve AM series. Roman timekeeping placed midnight exactly halfway between sunset and sunrise, marking the point between the duality of day and night. The Twelve AM bench draws on that duality and on daily rituals that mark time. The bench functions as a foyer seat for putting on and removing shoes, a daily action that marks the beginning and end of each day. The Twelve AM bed has a tall headboard that folds down and provides shelter for deep sleep at night. A small writing desk on the opposite side supports work during the day.
