The Blevio dining table by Ignazio Gardella joins the Molteni&C Heritage collection through a partnership with the Gardella Historical Archive. The partnership begins a relationship based on research and exchange, with further developments planned in the coming years. In 2015, Milan’s Galleria d'Arte Moderna, restored by Gardella himself, hosted an exhibition marking Molteni&C’s 80 years in the furniture business.
Ignazio Gardella designed the Blevio table in 1930 as a unique piece for his family home, Villa Usuelli in Blevio on Lake Como. The table presents an exceptionally harmonious and timeless design that has become part of the collective heritage of design. The piece combines pure lines with essential simplicity. Gardella was already an established figure in Italian architecture. During the same period, Gardella designed the Victor Emmanuel III sanatorium in Alessandria (1928, 1938), with its Rationalist chapel, the Hygiene and Prevention Laboratory (1933, 1938), and the tuberculosis dispensary (1933, 1938).
The elegant, geometrically linear Blevio table features a rich design and details that reward close attention. The design results from a process that removes all unnecessary elements. The table achieves a precise balance of form and function through selective material use, with the material serving as a primary aesthetic feature. The design focuses on essentials and removes decoration used only for ornament.
Two wooden capitals connect the upper sections of the vertical supports to the tabletop. A refined arrangement of opposing curves also stabilises the structure. The geometric centre of the tabletop’s semicircular ends aligns with the centre of the vertical supports. Curved forms emphasise the continuity of the tabletop without interruptions. The original piece had a copper finish, a material that presents technical challenges for contemporary dining tables. Molteni&C’s Research and Development Centre replaced the copper sheet on the wooden tabletop with a special metallic powder lacquer. The lacquer creates a similar sense of strength and handcrafted lustre while providing greater resistance.
The alternative to the 320 x 96 cm lacquered wood tabletop is a Breccia Capraia marble slab. The marble is set into an aluminium surface with a total thickness of 4 cm. Under the supervision of the Gardella Historical Archive, the proportions of the original design were adjusted to suit the height of contemporary dining tables. The revised height is 77 cm, while the original form remains intact.
At Villa Usuelli, the table stands among richly decorated rooms, nineteenth-century floors and the family’s antique furniture. The formal yet sculptural simplicity of the Blevio table creates dialogue with the surrounding rooms and their varied styles. The design demonstrates its suitability for different interior contexts.
