Milano glass defines fashion and style in the art of studio glass. The company became known for its distinctive Pate de Verre technique, a French term meaning “glass dough”. The technique itself is not new, but Milano glass is distinguished by using crystal instead of glass. Crystal becomes soft and malleable after processing with the Pate de Verre method, much like dough in the hands of a skilled chef, allowing artisans to create almost any form.

The Pate de Verre method has roots in ancient Egyptian art. The method involves baking pieces of coloured glass inside a refractory mould that precisely reproduces the mould’s contours. The process creates an exceptional texture and allows complex colour transitions that remain unique from one piece to another.

Pate de Verre crystal becomes dense, partly opaque and heavy, with a stone-like appearance. The material remains vivid and appears to glow from within. Artisans often leave the surfaces slightly matte and warm, without polishing them to the characteristic shine of crystal.
