Erwan Bouroullec: the designer who taught light to breathe

Modern design makes it increasingly difficult to find an object that creates surprise through feeling rather than form. French designer Erwan Bouroullec belongs to the rare group of creators who achieve that effect. His work never demands attention. His work does not seek to become the main feature of an interior or compete with architecture. His work creates a space where people feel calm.

This ability to work with emotion led Erwan Bouroullec to a long-term collaboration with Flos, a brand that has shaped the development of global lighting design for more than sixty years. Erwan Bouroullec and Flos have shown that lighting can serve as a complete architectural tool rather than a purely functional element.

From object to atmosphere

Erwan Bouroullec worked with his brother Ronan for almost twenty-five years. Their studio became one of the most influential studios in European design at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The brothers created furniture, textiles, partitions, accessories and lighting for major global brands, and leading contemporary art museums added their work to permanent collections.

The central aim was never the creation of beautiful objects alone. Erwan Bouroullec searched for a new logic of interaction between people and space. An object never exists independently in Erwan Bouroullec's work. An object becomes part of the architecture and an extension of light, air and movement.

This approach closely matched the philosophy of Flos.

Why Flos chose Erwan Bouroullec

Flos has worked with dozens of outstanding designers throughout its history. Only some designers have created collections that continue in production years after their debut.

Erwan Bouroullec's work has a rare quality: the work hardly ages. The designer does not follow fashion trends. The designer studies the fundamental properties of light, including direction, density, depth and the ability to change the perception of space.

For that reason, lighting created for Flos feels like a natural part of an interior rather than a decorative object.

Aim: rejecting familiar rules

Aim, developed with Ronan Bouroullec, became a major breakthrough.

Before Aim, pendant lighting usually followed the strict geometry of a room. Designers concealed the cable, kept the fixing point in a set position and defined the composition in advance.

Aim rejected those rules.

The cable became a complete design element. The cable allows users to change the height, direction and position of the light freely. Users can create their own lighting composition and turn illumination into a living system.

The principle now seems familiar, but Aim became one of the most discussed European product-design projects at the time of its launch. Aim remains one of the most recognisable Flos collections.

Luce Orizzontale: light inspired by glass

Erwan Bouroullec began an independent stage of his career after his joint studio with his brother ended. Luce Orizzontale became one of his first major projects for Flos.

The collection is based on an unusual idea: several moulded glass cylinders connect through aluminium elements to create an almost weightless horizontal composition.

Each element requires high production precision despite the apparent simplicity. Glass serves as both structure and light diffuser, making the fixture appear more like a glowing line than a conventional lighting product.

The collection demonstrates how modern technology can combine industrial production with craft quality in one object.

Emi: when light emerges from shadow

Emi became one of Erwan Bouroullec's latest developments for Flos.

The designer describes Emi as an attempt to create a “silhouette made of light”. The light source remains almost hidden inside the body, so the viewer perceives a soft glow rather than a lamp.

A new Flos optical system makes the effect possible. The system reduces glare and provides an even distribution of light.

Emi expresses a characteristic idea in Erwan Bouroullec's work: the best light is the light that people stop thinking about within a few minutes of switching it on. The light simply makes the space more comfortable.

Design without the need to impress

Erwan Bouroullec's work is difficult to confuse with the work of other designers.

The work contains no aggressive sculptural forms, demonstrative luxury or effort to attract attention at any cost. The work creates a sense of naturalness, as though the object had always existed.

For that reason, Erwan Bouroullec's projects look equally natural in private residences, hotels, offices, museums and public spaces.

This design requires no explanation.

The light of the future becomes invisible

Lighting development increasingly involves automation, intelligent control systems and architectural integration.

Erwan Bouroullec offers a different view. Technology should disappear from a person's field of vision. The more advanced the engineering solution, the less the user notices its presence.

Flos shares this philosophy.

The designer's joint projects therefore remain relevant despite changing interior trends. The projects were created for quality of life rather than fashion.
