Why the Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin duo is shaping the future of product design, and why the collaboration with Flos represents a new philosophy of light

Contemporary design is undergoing fundamental change. Two decades ago, the main question was “what does the object look like?” Today, the professional community asks a different question: “why was the object created this way?” Italian studio Formafantasma was among the first to define this shift by making research into materials, technologies and production processes the foundation of its design practice.

Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin founded Formafantasma in 2009 after graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven. The studio works across industrial design, architecture, art and science. Formafantasma projects are held in the collections of leading museums, including MoMA in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and Centre Pompidou in Paris. The studio’s partners include Flos, Prada, Hermès, Artek, Cassina, Lexus, Samsung and other global brands.

When design begins with research

For most manufacturers, new product development begins with the search for an expressive form. For Formafantasma, the process begins with an analysis of material origins, production chains, technologies and environmental consequences.

Every Formafantasma project is supported by extensive research. The designers study forestry, electronic waste recycling, traditional crafts, industrial engineering and the cultural context in which materials are used. This approach has made the studio one of the key intellectual forces in contemporary design.

Ore Streams is one of Formafantasma’s best-known projects. The project addresses the global problem of electronic waste. Instead of creating another furniture collection, the studio proposed a new perspective on the life cycle of household appliances. The project demonstrated that design can influence more than an object’s appearance and can also affect its environmental footprint.

Collaboration with Flos: engineering becomes aesthetics

Collaboration with Flos holds a special place in Formafantasma’s history. Flos has remained one of the leading innovators in architectural and decorative lighting for more than sixty years.

The joint work began with the WireRing collection. WireRing made the familiar electrical cable an element to display rather than conceal. The cable became part of the composition and a complete design tool. The light consists of two elements: an LED ring and a cable that creates a graphic line on the wall. The minimal construction focuses attention on the light itself and on the architecture of the space.

Blush table lamp became another project in the collaboration. Blush uses dichroic glass. A special coating changes the glass tones according to the viewing angle, creating soft colour transitions and the atmosphere of warm natural light.

SuperWire, presented at Milan Design Week, became the most significant joint project.

SuperWire: a new philosophy of light

SuperWire rethinks the construction of the modern light fixture from the ground up.

Thin glass panels connected by polished aluminium elements form the basis of the collection. A specially developed flexible LED strip sits inside the construction. The LED strip can be replaced without dismantling the entire product. The approach represents a fundamental change for the lighting industry.

Most modern LED fixtures require complete replacement after the light source fails. SuperWire proposes an alternative philosophy based on durability, repairability and the ability to update the product without abandoning the entire construction.

The collection includes table, pendant and floor models. Each model combines engineering precision, glasswork and the restrained aesthetic associated with Formafantasma. SuperWire treats light as part of spatial architecture rather than as a decorative effect.

A new language for premium interiors

Formafantasma work cannot be described as decorative in the conventional sense. Formafantasma objects do not seek to become the main focal point of an interior. The objects create a calm, intellectual setting where beauty comes from structural honesty, material quality and engineering logic.

Formafantasma objects fit naturally into contemporary private residences, boutique hotels, galleries and public spaces. These settings value depth of thought and quality of execution over demonstrative luxury.

Object value is now defined by more than appearance. Object value also depends on the story of creation, material origins, repairability and a long service life. These principles are becoming a new standard in global design.
