Jasper Morrison: the master of Super Normal and the designer who made light feel natural

Jasper Morrison is one of the most influential industrial designers of the modern era. The designer's name is associated with the Super Normal philosophy, an approach based on the idea that the finest objects do not seek to surprise or attract attention. The best objects feel so natural, functional and harmonious that they seem to have always existed.

This idea shaped Jasper Morrison's long-standing collaboration with Flos. The designer's lighting does not dominate an interior, but creates atmosphere while revealing the architecture of a space. The Glo-Ball, Smithfield, Superloon and Oplight collections became some of Flos's most recognisable projects and established a new classic in contemporary lighting design.

Biography

Jasper Morrison was born in London in 1959. The designer studied at Kingston Polytechnic before continuing at the Royal College of Art in London and Universität der Künste Berlin.

Jasper Morrison opened his own Office for Design studio in London in 1986. The designer's projects gained international recognition in the early 1990s, while collaborations with leading European manufacturers made Morrison a key figure in contemporary industrial design.

Jasper Morrison currently works with companies including Flos, Vitra, Cappellini, Emeco, Alessi, Muji, Maruni, Samsung, Fredericia and many others. The designer's works are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Vitra Design Museum and leading design museums worldwide.

Design philosophy

The central idea behind Jasper Morrison's work is called Super Normal.

Jasper Morrison believes that an ideal object should not display its creator's ego or seek attention through a complex form. The object should feel so natural and comfortable that people stop noticing the object itself and focus on the comfort of use.

Jasper Morrison says:

«Objects should never shout.» («Objects should not shout.»)

Key principles of Jasper Morrison's design:

simplicity without primitivism;
function as the basis of aesthetics;
honest materials;
durability;
visual calm;
careful attention to light quality and atmosphere.

This approach gives Jasper Morrison's projects lasting relevance beyond changing fashions.

Jasper Morrison and Flos

Jasper Morrison has repeatedly said that Flos was the company he dreamed of working with from the beginning of his career. The designer admired projects by Achille Castiglioni and other Flos masters, as well as Flos's later willingness to combine classic Italian design with innovation.

The collaboration produced lighting designs that are now regarded as examples of contemporary design classics.

Glo-Ball (1998)

The Glo-Ball collection is Jasper Morrison's best-known work for Flos.

Jasper Morrison aimed to create a light that recalled the natural glow of the moon or a small luminous sphere that softly fills a space with light.

The defining feature of the series is a blown opaline glass diffuser that provides even, comfortable light distribution.

Collection features
blown opaline glass diffuser;
soft diffused light;
glare-free illumination;
multiple formats: table, floor, pendant, ceiling and wall versions;
suitability for all interior types.

Glo-Ball is one of Flos's most successful collections and has remained in production for more than twenty-five years after its launch.

Smithfield (2009)

The Smithfield collection followed Jasper Morrison's visit to London's famous Smithfield Market.

The concise aluminium body combines an industrial aesthetic with a carefully designed optical system that provides comfortable directional lighting.

Model features:

clean geometric form;
aluminium body;
efficient reflected lighting;
pendant and ceiling versions;
suitability for residential and public spaces.

Smithfield is particularly popular in contemporary kitchens, dining rooms, offices and restaurants because of its function and architectural presence.

Superloon (2015)

Superloon is one of Jasper Morrison's most innovative projects.

Instead of a traditional diffuser, the designer proposed an ultra-thin circular LED disc inspired by the full moon.

The light features a gyroscopic system that allows the angle of the luminous disc to change freely and directs light with precision.

Collection features
ultra-thin LED disc;
gyroscopic adjustment;
Edge Lighting technology;
smooth adjustment of light temperature;
minimal architectural aesthetic.

Superloon shows how a contemporary light can use LED technology without traditional structural limitations.

Oplight (2021)

The Oplight collection further demonstrates Jasper Morrison's aim of achieving maximum efficiency with minimal visual presence.

The wall light has a slim aluminium body and a highly efficient optical system developed according to sustainable design principles.

Oplight received the Green GOOD DESIGN Award in 2022 for combining an ecological approach, energy efficiency and lighting quality.

Why the Flos collaboration became significant

Jasper Morrison's work helped Flos reaffirm that outstanding design does not need to be visually spectacular.

The Glo-Ball, Smithfield, Superloon and Oplight collections share an aim to create lights that do not compete with architecture but become a natural continuation of the space. The collections work equally well in residential interiors, museums, hotels, offices and public spaces.

The main value of these projects lies not in unusual forms, but in light quality, engineering precision and the ability to create a comfortable atmosphere.

Jasper Morrison in contemporary interiors

Jasper Morrison lighting is particularly suited to interiors that value calm aesthetics, function and timeless design. The lighting works well in contemporary apartments, private houses, boutique hotels, restaurants, libraries and offices, creating a soft, natural lighting environment.

The Super Normal philosophy makes Jasper Morrison's projects versatile. The designs do not follow fashion or seek attention, and that quality allows them to remain relevant for decades.
