Philippe Malouin: the designer who proved that simplicity requires courage

Many interior objects seek attention through complex geometry, unusual materials or technological effects. Philippe Malouin takes the opposite approach. Philippe Malouin's work looks so natural that each piece seems to have always existed. Years of research, dozens of prototypes and precise engineering logic support that apparent simplicity.

This approach made the British-Canadian designer one of the most interesting authors of a new generation and led to collaboration with Flos, a company that has shaped the development of global lighting design for more than sixty years. The Philippe Malouin and Flos collaboration focuses on improving everyday life rather than creating a striking object.

Design begins in the workshop

Philippe Malouin does not work exclusively at a computer. Almost every Philippe Malouin idea first passes through the workshop.

Philippe Malouin spent hours in childhood creating toys, car models and wooden structures. Studies at Design Academy Eindhoven, ENSCI in Paris and the University of Montreal later shaped a professional language in which engineering thinking is as important as artistic thinking.

Philippe Malouin opened a design studio in London in 2008. The studio's projects now cover furniture, lighting, art objects, interior installations and architectural objects. Studio clients include Flos, Zanotta, De Sede, Iittala, Acerbis and other leading European brands.

Why Flos chose Philippe Malouin

Flos has consistently worked with authors who offer new perspectives on familiar objects. Flos valued Philippe Malouin's ability to bring together industrial design, craftsmanship and environmental thinking.

Philippe Malouin describes working with Flos as the fulfilment of a long-held dream. Flos supported the project at every stage, from initial sketches through engineering development, production and presentation, while preserving the author's vision without compromise. This working model created an object in which technology supports the idea instead of overpowering the idea.

Bilboquet: freedom of movement with one gesture

Bilboquet became the first joint work by Philippe Malouin and Flos, and Flos presented the table lamp in 2023.

Bilboquet initially appears almost childlike, with a compact cylindrical base and a spherical head. The spherical head provides the project's main engineering solution.

Philippe Malouin drew inspiration from ball joints used in industrial technology. The designer created a mechanism that directs light in almost any direction with one movement of the hand.

Bilboquet uses a single pivoting joint instead of multiple hinges, screws and complex fixings. The single-joint construction keeps the lamp visually clear and convenient for everyday use.

Sustainability without compromise

Philippe Malouin designed Bilboquet for many years of use.

Bilboquet's body uses a modern polymer produced with by-products from the paper industry. Separate construction elements are designed for replacement when necessary. The LED module also prevents the product from becoming a disposable object.

Philippe Malouin treats sustainable design as the practical ability to repair, maintain and use an object for decades, rather than as a fashionable slogan.

An object that does not seek attention

Philippe Malouin's work contains little interest in decoration.

Philippe Malouin deliberately avoids complex forms, bright visual effects and demonstrative luxury. The designer instead seeks a precise balance between function, proportion and material.

Bilboquet fits naturally into a home office, bedroom, home library or public space because the lamp does not compete with the interior. The lamp helps organise daily life instead of drawing attention to its own form.

This restraint has become one of the main signs of quality in contemporary industrial design.

Simplicity is the most difficult stage of design

Philippe Malouin often says that removing excess is much harder than adding something new.

Every millimetre of Bilboquet underwent numerous tests before the construction became compact, stable and convenient at the same time. The finished object looks natural enough to conceal the complexity of the engineering work.

Design that does not age with fashion emerges through this process.
