«Looking at the number of companies founded each year, it is easy to forget where they began. Scale, quality and innovation helped some brands grow into major companies through carefully developed vertical integration.

Loro Piana history, from Quarona to international recognition

The Loro Piana family, based in northern Italy, traded wool for generations from the early 1800s. The family developed a textile supplier network during the nineteenth century before founding a wool mill in Quarona, Italy, where the company headquarters remain.

Piedmont is the largest region in northern Italy, surrounded by the Alps and bordered by France and Switzerland. Pietro Loro Piana founded the family company in Quarona in 1924, in a pastoral town about 90 minutes from Milan. The company grew from modest beginnings into a major cashmere producer and an important buyer of fine wool.

The family began as wool traders in the early nineteenth century. Pietro’s engineering education and business initiative during industrial change established the basis for later growth. When his nephew Franco took control in 1941, Franco Loro Piana introduced the company’s precious fabrics to a growing international market. Designers and manufacturers in Paris, America and Japan soon used the Made in Italy materials.

Franco Loro Piana expands the family business

Pietro developed the company structure and production infrastructure. His nephew Franco Loro Piana consolidated the textile sales division and expanded the family’s international presence.

After the Second World War, Franco extended Loro Piana’s reputation and fabrics beyond Italy. Between 1940 and 1960, the Loro Piana name became associated with fine fabrics and finishing around the world.

Franco’s sons Sergio and Pier Luigi began the next stage of Loro Piana development. The brand expanded beyond textile production into international luxury.

Loro Piana and LVMH

In 2013, Sergio and Pier Luigi Loro Piana sold an 80% stake in the company to the French luxury conglomerate LVMH for 2.6 billion dollars. The sale took place several months before Sergio died at the age of sixty-five.

Loro Piana remains based in northern Italy and operates more than 10 specialised production sites, including a quality-control laboratory in Roccapietra. The company has 158 international stores, from Aspen to Capri.

Six facts about Loro Piana fabrics

1. Exclusive cashmere
Cashmere is the fine undercoat of the adult Hircus goat. Each goat produces approximately 200 to 250 grams of undercoat per year. Shepherds collect the fibre in spring by carefully combing the animals.



2. Baby Cashmere
Baby Cashmere comes from the undercoat of Hircus kids. The fibre has an average diameter of 13 to 13.5 microns and is collected through delicate combing during the animal’s first 12 months. Each animal produces no more than 30 to 40 grams, only once in its life. Loro Piana spent 10 years persuading Mongolian and Chinese farmers to keep the valuable fibre separate from adult goat wool.



3. Time and production
Loro Piana does not accelerate complex production processes at the expense of quality. The company’s cashmere can come from a remote farm in Mongolia that requires more than four days of overland travel.



4. Protecting vicuña
Vicuña is a camelid found in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. Vicuña fibre is among the rarest and most valuable fibres in the world. In 1994, Loro Piana acquired a controlling stake in an Argentine company with exclusive rights to shear 6,000 vicuñas living above 4,000 metres on land measuring about 85,000 hectares. In 2008, Loro Piana created Reserva dr. Franco Loro Piana, Peru’s first private nature reserve. The 2,000-hectare protected area allows vicuñas to live freely in the wild.





5. Merino wool
Australia and New Zealand are known for merino wool. Loro Piana buys the finest lots at annual auctions, especially the highest-quality 1PP wool and between 30 and 50 of the finest bales from 3 million offered for sale. One of the finest bales receives the World Record Bale title for exceptional fineness, and Loro Piana regularly buys this bale.
