Today, Poltrona Frau is more than a furniture manufacturer. A history that began long before modern design

Renzo Frau founded the company in Turin in 1912. Italy was still developing its own furniture industry in the early twentieth century. Frau was among the first entrepreneurs to see the potential of high-end furniture where comfort matched aesthetic value.

Within a few years, Poltrona Frau chairs and sofas appeared in government institutions, theatres and aristocratic homes. The company later became the official furniture supplier to the Italian royal court, a distinction that strengthened its reputation for decades. The headquarters and production facilities are now located in Tolentino, in the Marche region, where furniture-making traditions pass from one generation to the next. 

Leather that becomes more beautiful with age

Leather becomes softer over time, gains depth of colour and develops a unique texture while retaining strength and elasticity.

Every hide undergoes careful selection. Skilled craftspeople then cut each piece by hand, taking account of the grain, density and direction of the fibres. The finished product therefore looks cohesive and harmonious, while the seams remain almost invisible. The process takes considerably longer than automated production, but the process gives Poltrona Frau furniture its character. 

Design that respects tradition 

Poltrona Frau has never sought to create striking objects solely for high-profile launches. New collections continue the brand's existing story. Poltrona Frau does not discard successful solutions simply because fashion has changed.

Modern models therefore sit alongside pieces created decades ago in the catalogue. The pieces do not look like museum exhibits. The pieces fit naturally into current interiors. Designers who shaped Poltrona Frau

Over more than a century, the company has worked with leading architects and designers. Gio Ponti became one of the most recognised collaborators and made a significant contribution to Italian modernism. Jean-Marie Massaud, Roberto Lazzeroni, Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, GamFratesi, Neri&Hu, Fumie Shibata and many other creators later joined the brand.

Each designer worked in a different way, yet the result remains recognisable. Precise proportions, quality workmanship and attention to detail make Poltrona Frau furniture unmistakable. 

Collections that became part of design history 

Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair is the chair most closely associated with Poltrona Frau. The chair was introduced in 1930 and has remained in production for almost a century.

Soft rounded forms, a deep seat and impeccable leatherwork have made Vanity Fair one of the most recognisable models in Italian design history. 

Archibald

Jean-Marie Massaud designed the Archibald chair to show how modern a traditional material can be. Loose leather folds, a light metal frame and a comfortable seat make the model elegant and relaxed at the same time.

Archibald has become one of the brand's most sought-after collections over the years. ### Chester One Reinterpreting the classic English sofa, Chester One retains its recognisable button tufting while introducing lighter proportions and a modern structure. 

 Let It Be

The Let It Be modular system shows how Poltrona Frau responds to contemporary ways of living. The sofa adapts easily to different uses while maintaining a calm, restrained appearance.
